Perspective

I was recently reading a family friend's blog about her son's autism diagnosis.
It reminded me of the day that Danny was diagnosed with autism.

I was pregnant with Sarah. I had taken him to do several days of testing with a specialist. At the end of the testing, Brian and I met with the specialist and she told us all of the results that she had found. I wasn't very surprised with the results. Until she said that he had high functioning autism. I wasn't expecting him to be "severe" enough to be considered autistic. I fought back tears. I was doing a pretty good job at it until she said that she recommended ABA.

ABA is a very intense program for autistic children. You need to hire someone to come into your home for about 40 hours per week and work with your child in a room with just the 2 of them. I knew a lot about ABA beforehand so when she said that, I couldn't hold back the tears anymore. I remember thinking that my life was drastically changing at that moment. I just sat and listened to her recommendations while trying not to start sobbing.

I held that in until I got to my car. Then, I just let it all out. It started out with sobbing. Then it turned into a wailing. And yelling. And screaming. I'm pretty sure I was hyperventilating. I actually remember thinking, if someone sees me like this, they will think I am dying. I was having a hard time focusing on the road during all of this. I couldn't see very well and I was just thinking of the worst possible things that were going to happen to my child. This was definitely something that we didn't plan for. Actually Danny's whole life was not what we had planned.

I went to pick Danny up from my parent's house and my brother asked me what they said. I started crying again and I couldn't talk. He quickly apologized for asking but I told him that I needed to talk about it so I told him.

************

I don't talk about my diabetes very much because I hate it.
I hate it so much.
I hate that my life depends on this stupid disease.
I hate that I am constantly having to watch my blood sugars. Constantly having to watch what I am eating and counting carbs to try and figure out the right amount of insulin to take.
I hate that if I take too much insulin, my blood sugar will go low and there is a possibility of me passing out, having a seizure, going into a comma, or dying.
I hate that if I don't take enough insulin, my blood sugar will go high, which can cause eye disease, nerve disease, kidney disease, or death, to name a few.
I hate that if I don't have my insulin and test strips at all times, I can't control my diabetes and could end up in the hospital or dead. Don't even get me started on insurance companies and what happens when I run out after the pharmacy is closed.
I hate worrying about not waking up in the morning or having a reaction when Brian is gone.

But even though my life depends on this stupid disease, I am not going to let it control my life. I am going to be happy. I love my life. I had 3 healthy children with no problem at all. Well except for the time that I was hugely pregnant and peeing in a cup that I couldn't see and ended up getting pee all over myself and my clothes at the doctor's office. ANYWAY, I love the people that are in my life. I am going to surround myself with people that make my life better. I am going to make sure that I make 10 people laugh every single day. I am going to surround myself with the gospel to make it better. I am going to trust in the Lord to make my life the best it can be.

Heck ya I am going to scream and sob and go hysterical every once in a while. How else would I deal with this crap?

I look back at that day that Danny was diagnosed with Autism and I am amazed at how well he is doing. Danny has so many friends. He was the first person to finish his kindergarten testing by 10 minutes and is almost reading at a 3rd grade level. He loves to be in charge and loves to try new things. I am pretty sure he is not even on the spectrum anymore!

Ha! Take that Autism and Diabetes and all of you horrible diseases out there! I am not going to let you ruin my life. If you had a physical form, I would beat the crap out of you and end with a roundhouse kick to your face.

St George

Since Danny is off track, we decided to start the break off with a trip to sunny St George. I was so happy to be out of the cold.

Swimming

Sarah was in heaven.

So were the boys. They loved the hot tub. Yay for me!

Bike Rides

We took several bike rides each day. It is amazing how much happiness being outside in the warmth brings to all of us.

We loved to take bike rides to see the ducks and swan. Sam said that it was a walrus....

The Park

I wish we had a park like this in our neighborhood. The kids loved it. I guess I shouldn't complain. We have tons of parks. All within walking distance.

LOVE is

Love is watching basketball several nights of the week with your husband just to spend time with him, even though you would much rather be watching...well anything but sports.
Love is letting your wife sleep in every Tuesday because she stays out till after midnight every Monday night watching the Bachelor with her girlfriends.

Love is listening to your son instead of talking, even when he gets sent to the principal's office 2 days in a row for hitting the same boy.
Love is giving your Dad the dollar bill you found in your pocket because he gave a presentation to your class.
Love is telling Mom that whenever Sarah cries, all she needs to do is rub her leg a special way and she will stop crying.

Love is when Dad lets his boys stay up an extra 30 minutes every night so that they can play Batman together in the basement.
Love is when you take special care of your sister all of the time. Love is when you make sure to have an extra treat at all times for your older brother.

Love is stopping everything you are doing to read your daughter her favorite books. Love is hugging, kissing, and squeezing your daughter every possible second you get because you can't get enough of her.
Love is blowing your Mom and Dad kisses all day without being asked.

Just when you think you can't possibly give any more love, you find this big burst of happiness inside of you because you realize that there will always be more that you can give. There is no better feeling in the world. Love has taught me so much patience. Love has taught me to give up more of my selfishness and give more to others. I have so much love for my family.

And what would our family do without our wonderful friends?

For Valentines, Brian and I went out to dinner together. We had a great time. Then we met up with our friends and saw This Means War. It was hilarious! We had such a fun time.

Happy Birthday Sam!!

I just love this sweet boy. He loves to laugh and have fun. He has so much energy and has a hard time holding it in :) He loves being silly and getting attention for doing weird things. Wow. He sounds a lot like me. Except I don't have his energy.
He is so good at taking care of Sarah. He is always helping her and trying to make her happy. Sam would be happy wrestling with his friends all day. He has a hard time keeping his hands to himself.
He was so excited for his birthday. He wanted to have a Pajama Party with McDonalds for everyone so that's what we did. I love you Sam! You make me laugh every single day.

He was so excited about his dragon jacket that Kellie and Ty gave him that he ran to all of the neighbor's houses to show them.

He wanted a batman cake.

Orlando!

Brian and his Dad had to go to Orlando for work so Brian's mom and I came along. It was just what I needed in January. It was 70-80 degrees and the warm air made me so happy.

First, we went to Universal Studios Orlando. This is the best theme park ever! The rides are so intense. We went straight to the Harry Potter World and it was awesome. We also had a pass that got us to the front of the line of every ride which we didn't even use much because there was no one there!
We loved the Harry Potter ride. It was so fun! I also LOVED the butterbeer!!!! Sooo good!

Brian's parent's were happy to do whatever!

Haha! I love this picture of Paul. Anyway, after 5 rides, I had to be done. Seriously, I am not kidding when I say that this park is intense! I also took dramamine for the first time and I think that made me feel worse. I felt a little groggy and soooooo nauseous. But that's ok because we went over to Disneyworld and hung out at our hotel.

The next day we went to Disneyworld which was so wonderful. The whole time I kept thinking the kids would love it here but I think we will wait a few years to bring them here. We only had enough time for Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios but it was the perfect day.

The Animal Kingdom Lodge is so amazing. I really wanted the kids to be here for this but we needed a trip with just Brian and I. I love this hotel.

Our view from the hotel room:

Best view of all!

I was sad to leave on Saturday. It was 80 degrees and I was just so happy soaking up the sun and shopping at the outlets. Especially since I found a Lululemon outlet! I was very happy about that! It was hard to come back to the cold weather but I was so excited to see the kids so it wasn't too bad. Goodbye Orlando. Thanks for keeping us entertained!
